The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Senior Research Assistant for a non-laboratory research position. The individual hired will function as the overall research program manager for the Center Director, Dr. Amy McGuire. Dr. McGuire’s research program currently consists of over 10 projects totaling over $5M in funding and focuses on projects examining the ethical, legal and social implications of emerging technologies and novel therapeutics.
The selected candidate will work closely with Dr. McGuire, external collaborators, and the Center’s interdisciplinary faculty and staff across projects in a dynamic role to manage existing research grants and foster long-term growth and expansion of the program’s research portfolio. This position will be responsible for managing programmatic, reporting, and compliance activities across multiple grants. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience on relevant research grants and experience conducting research in a related field (e.g., bioethics, humanities, public health, social sciences).

Position Summary:

The Division of Medical Ethics is looking for a Project Associate to work directly with Alison Bateman-House, PhD. We would like the candidate to start as soon as possible. We expect the employee to devote 35hours a week to support the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Working Group on Compassionate Use and Preapproval Access (CUPA) and the Working Group on Pediatric Gene Therapy and Medical Ethics (PGTME) in the following tasks.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Work with Dr. Bateman-House and the project managers of CUPA and PGTME to support these groups, for example by
  • Managing scheduling
  • Inviting internal and external speakers, day-of-event organization, and assistance with marketing for meetings/conferences
  • Notetaking in meetings and finalizing/distributing meeting minutes
  • Maintaining organized and updated files and contact databases
  • Researching and drafting documents on bioethics-related issues
  • Liaising with departmental communications re website maintenance
  • Other tasks as assigned. Candidate must be able and willing to work in tandem with the CUPA and PGTME project managers to ensure the groups’ success. This may mean temporarily assuming new responsibilities if, for example, one of these individuals is on leave.
  • Assist Division director/faculty as assigned with time sensitive research assistance and special projects
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Candidate must have effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work within a team environment, as well as independent
  • Candidate must have time management skills and the ability to multitask while paying attention to detail. Strong organizational skills, including careful attention to detail, are required, as are the abilities to timely monitor/respond to email communications and meet deadlines.
  • Computer skills, particularly familiarity with Apple products, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), electronic calendars, video conferencing, and other basic office support software, and internet research, are essential for this position.

The NIH-funded project will use qualitative or other research methods to better understand how scientific and ethical review committees make decisions about launching first in human trials of drugs. The PDF will work under the supervision of Jonathan Kimmelman and in collaboration with a team based at University of California-Davis. Position Summary

We seek a dynamic, energetic Program Director to develop, coordinate, and implement academic programming and operations in the Division of Ethics.  Working directly with the Division Chief, the Program Director will manage a growing program of interdisciplinary faculty and staff engaged in bioethics research and teaching across a full range of activities, including daily operations, strategic planning, and implementation of new projects. This position will involve working collaboratively with other divisions and departments, grant-funded initiatives, and multi-institutional partners. The ideal candidate has a proven record of innovating programs and taking initiative to create and implement outreach and educational initiatives. This position will involve managing staff, leading communications, and managing financial and administrative details. The Program Director role is a full-time position focused and reports to the Division Chief and the Department Administrator.  


Responsibilities

  • Directs communications, marketing and fund-raising and outreach for the Division
  • Oversee project management, including managing staff, budgets, program planning and implementation .
  • Plan and coordinate meetings, workshops, seminars, lectures and other events
  • Support and implement strategic plans for division programs and initiatives
  • Support all aspects of research administration, including grant applications, human subjects, budgets, reporting, and publications
  • Implement and oversee outreach plans, including the division calendar, website, social media and newsletter
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departmental divisions and related university programs
  • Travel to approximately 2-3 professional meetings a year representing the Division

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in the social sciences, bioethics, communications, marketing and/or other related field
  • Experience in web design and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and other design tools
  • Familiarity with NIH grant funding administration
