She is a lawyer and empirical bioethics researcher. Her research aims to advance ethics, equity, and impact in the conduct of clinical and translational research and the implementation of emerging biomedical technologies. Using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches, Professor Kraft explores these topics with diverse groups of patients, participants, and community members; these perspectives are integral to her ethical analyses and recommendations for implementation. She is particularly interested in addressing translational gaps and ensuring scientific advances are meaningful, trustworthy, and accessible to people in real-world settings. 00:45:04 Ashlin Amano: Often, her work involves partnering with research teams and health technology professionals to build capacity to engage with their patient or participant populations’ specific priorities. Professor Kraft’s recent and ongoing projects have focused on: enhancing relationship building during neonatal clinical trial recruitment; supporting values-oriented research decision making through novel informed consent approaches; exploring experiences and motivations of controlled human infection trial participants; understanding patient values regarding learning health systems; creating participant-informed guidance for data sharing in craniofacial research; and incorporating underrepresented community members’ views into AI-enabled mobile health technology development. Her work has been funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. 00:45:11 Ashlin Amano: Presenter: Hadley Stephens Smith, PhD, MPSA Biography: https://www.bcm.edu/people-search/hadley-smith-30892 00:45:27 Ashlin Amano: Dr. Hadley Stevens Smith is a health economist and a researcher of the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics. She is an Assistant Professor of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and a Member of the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics. Dr. Smith studies clinical, patient-centered, and economic outcomes of genomic medicine, primarily for newborn and pediatric patient populations. The goal of her research program is to inform efficient and ethical implementation of genomic technologies into clinical care. 00:45:34 Ashlin Amano: Dr. Smith received a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence career development award from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) to study the family-level utility of pediatric genomic sequencing using a patient-centered approach and decision science methods. She is the Project Director of the Precision Medicine Policy and Treatment (PreEMPT) model and a co-Investigator on the BabySeq Project, two NIH-funded research efforts that evaluate the impacts of newborn genomic sequencing. She serves on multiple national working groups to develop policy recommendations for newborn screening and diagnosis using biochemical and genetic technologies. Additionally, she is a Section Editor for Economics and Precision Medicine at Genetics in Medicine. 00:45:42 Ashlin Amano: Dr. Smith completed a BS in Political Science with a minor in Genetics at Texas A&M University. She received a Master of Public Service and Administration with a concentration in Health Policy Analysis from the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. She earned her PhD in Public Health (Health Economics track) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. After completing her PhD, Dr. Smith was a Health Policy Fellow in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine where she contributed to several high-profile NIH-funded genomics research efforts, including the Clinical Sequencing Evidence Generating Research Consortium (CSER). 00:50:12 Xiaoqing (Cathy) Cheng: Does K GRANT need the awarded person move to a different institution? 00:51:09 Xiaoqing (Cathy) Cheng: Or K grant awarded person can be independent in the same insititution? 00:51:37 Renee Pierre-Louis: Would the NIH award a K grant to a researcher who works on research 20 hours per week? 00:52:12 Sapana Bansod: There is new rule no more than 6 year experimence people can apply? 00:52:16 Sapana Bansod: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-25-313.html 00:53:08 Sapana Bansod: can someone explain in this true? 01:00:45 Ashlin Amano: Resources shared by NHGRI: NHGRI ELSI Staff https://www.genome.gov/Funded-Programs-Projects/ELSI-Research-Program-ethical-legal-social-implications#staff NHGRI funding opportunities for research training https://www.genome.gov/careers-training/NHGRI-Funding-Opportunities-Training-Career-Development Sample ELSI Grants https://www.genome.gov/Funded-Programs-Projects/ELSI-Research-Program/Sample-Applications-and-Summary-Statements 01:01:14 Ashlin Amano: Resources shared by NHGRI: ELSI Research Interests Page https://www.genome.gov/Funded-Programs-Projects/ELSI-Research-Program/research-areas Other Institutes’ ELSI Interests https://www.genome.gov/Funded-Programs-Projects/ELSI-Research-Program-ethical-legal-social-implications/domains/participating-ICs Parent K99/R00 Opportunity https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-24-194.html Parent K01 Opportunity https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/pa-20-190.html 01:01:25 Ashlin Amano: Resources shared by NHGRI: ELSIHub Grantspersonship Webinars https://elsihub.org/topics-search?search_terms=grantsmanship&f%5B0%5D=topics_content_type%3Avideo Resources and Programs for NIH Applicants Infographic https://public.csr.nih.gov/sites/default/files/2022-06/CSR_ResourceInfographic_v21.pdf NIH Reporter – search what we’ve funded NIH RePORTER https://reporter.nih.gov/ NIH Matchmaker – what has been funded related to your interests https://reporter.nih.gov/matchmaker 01:01:50 Osahon Asowata: Is K1 grant awarded to post-doc on J1 visa and from a foreign country (not a permanent residence in the US) 01:02:25 Sapana Bansod: I am the 5 year postdoc, and I apply for k99 but did not received can I apply for it as it say more than 6 years experience of postdoc can apply? 01:03:31 info@elsihub.org: Thanks for your questions. I overlapped with Stephanie at Seattle Children’s in bioethics. I’m an expert in science communications and plain language. I help edit grant proposals and give talks on how to improve writing skills (National Postdoctoral Association has a recording of my talk on writing research summaries and the importance of plain language). I also run writing groups for grad students, postdocs, and faculty to work on manuscripts and proposals. Please connect: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ellenkuwana/ 01:16:08 Nicole Lockhart: To expand on Dave's answer about family leave during a K award, the NIH allows you to receive the same benefits as anyone employed by your institution. If your local policy is to allow 8 weeks of paid maternity leave, you may draw salary from your K award during that 8-week period. If you wish to take more time off, you may take an unpaid leave of absence if your institution and mentor concur, and your project will still be viable after the leave. Please check in with the Program Officer assigned to your grant so they can help you work through the steps needed before you leave begins. I have had K99/R00 awardees have children during their award - it is a fairly common situation. Communication is key to make sure things go smoothly. 01:25:28 John Duffy: Thank you!
