CERA Accessibility & Usability
The Center for ELSI Resources and Analysis (CERA) is committed to continually improving the ELSIhub user experience for everyone, including individuals with disabilities, and facilitating full and broad participation in our events. We routinely conduct formal needs assessments and evaluation research to inform our work and undertake comprehensive auditing and usability testing to improve our website.
Accessibility
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for web designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities at three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. ELSIhub conformance has been evaluated by an external reviewer, and a statement of our specific compliances is available on our Voluntary Product Accessibility Template.
Our work today has focused on the following ELSIhub upgrades:
- Text alternatives for images
- Colors with sufficient contrast ratios
- Keyboard accessible navigation of all user interface components
- Compatibility with assistive technologies
- Captions for video recordings
CERA events feature accessible PowerPoint presentations, live captioning, and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation. We also hope to catalyze uptake of accessibility measures beyond our center by providing advice by experts, guidance, and resources to support the upgrade of your research project or organization.
Usability
We are collaborating with the Science Gateways Center of Excellence (SGX3), a National Science Foundation Cyberinfrastructure Center of Excellence, on our second usability engagement. This effort is designed to help us meet the needs of our growing community by providing insights about the expectations of new ELSIhub users and honing the search functionality of the platform for a broad and diverse set of user groups.
