    Job Description

The Department of Health Humanities & Bioethics in the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) seeks to recruit a faculty member at the level of assistant professor or associate professor for a tenure track position in bioethics.

The University of Rochester was among the first medical schools to create a formal Division of Medical Humanities & Bioethics in 1984 as a natural outgrowth of the school’s signature biopsychosocial model to solidify the presence of the humanities in the medical school curriculum. In December 2021, the Division became a formal department of Health Humanities and Bioethics (HHBE) with the aim to become nationally recognized for active engagement and contributions to the advancement of ethical, just, and humanistic health care, and for education and training in health humanities and bioethics. It now seeks to expand the number of full-time faculty to achieve this vision.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty group with training in philosophy, bioethics, clinical ethics, humanities and the performing and visual arts who are engaged in scholarship, clinical and community service, and the teaching of graduate students,  medical students and other trainees in the health professions.  The candidate will have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree. The candidate must have an excellent record of scholarship. We are particularly interested in a faculty member with an interest in ELSI (Ethics, Legal and Social Issues) genetics or any area of pediatric ethics.  Empirical research skills and experience in an academic health center preferred. History of grant funding preferred but not required. Training in clinical ethics is preferred but not required. We especially welcome faculty who bring an equity lens to their teaching and who demonstrate a strong record of collaboration in scholarship and research.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the medical school curriculum and to mentor medical students in the bioethics pathway.

They will spend at least 50% of their time on scholarship.
