    Job Description

The Institute for Bioethics & Health Humanities (IBHH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellows as part of our Visiting Scholars Program for a one-year appointment with the possibility to extend for a second year. This semi-structured program integrates fellows into interdisciplinary research projects while affording them time to focus on their own research.

We are hiring for multiple positions and especially looking for fellows interested in:
    1. Substance use disorders. IBHH and the Center for Addiction Research at UTMB are collaborating on a project regarding ethics, public policy, and stigma as it relates to substance use disorders. The fellow will play an integral role in shaping this project.
    2. Translational science and Implementation Science, including approaches informed by Science and Technology Studies or the Science of Team Science. The fellow will work with IBHH faculty on implementation studies using qualitative or mixed methods.
    3. Health humanities. Research engaging narratives of health and illness, history, and critical theory. We are interested in co-developing grant-supported projects in the health humanities that are collaborative and that include applied dimensions for practice or policy.
    4. Environmental health. Social, legal, ethical and policy issues related to environmental justice, social justice in public health or One Health research.

Postdoctoral fellows will have opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and applied work across campus and with relevant communities to translate their scholarship into impact. Fellows will be supported and mentored by IBHH faculty and collaborators from other UTMB departments in writing grants through major funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, National Endowment for the Humanities, philanthropic funders, as well as the variety of internal funding mechanisms available at UTMB. In addition to funding research, the grant writing aspect of the fellowship includes the possibility of funding further years of postdoctoral training as well as transitional career grants.

Candidates must have a PhD, JD, MD or other terminal degree with preference given to candidates who take one or more of the following approaches/methods to the topics listed above:
    • Qualitative and/or mixed methods
    • Empirical Bioethics
    • Science and Technology Studies
    • Community-Partnership or Engagement and/or Patient-Public Involvement
This is an ideal opportunity for humanities and social science scholars to gain experience working in an applied fashion in a dynamic, multidisciplinary institution within an academic health science center. Interested applicants must submit a letter of interest with a description of experience, research interests, and career goals, along with their curriculum vitae to the Search Committee ([email protected]). Review of applications will begin immediately, and applications received before March 31, 2023, will be given full consideration. Start date is September 1, 2023. In addition to a salary of $60,000, scholars will receive health insurance, professional development funds, office space, computer, library access, and various other UTMB benefits.
