MODERATOR: Marsha Michie, PhD received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. She also completed postdoctoral training at the UNC Center for Genomics and Society, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics. Dr. Michie’s research investigates social and ethical issues in biomedical research, translation, and practice, centering around genomics and other novel technologies with a particular emphasis on reproduction, disability, and health equity. Her scholarly work focuses on the experiences of people who are stakeholders in biomedical research, the innovations it produces, and the ways these are translated into clinical care. She has conducted research with genomic research participants, people who have refused research participation, families seeking or dealing with genetic diagnoses, and various stakeholders in new technologies for prenatal testing—including clinicians, test developers, pregnant women, and disability advocates. Her work is informed by bioethical principles, social theory, and literatures on identity, practice, narrative, and disability.
Dr. Michie co-directs the PhD in Bioethics for the Department and frequently teaches and mentors students in bioethics, genetic counseling, medicine, and other areas of study. She currently teaches courses in ethical issues in genetics, reproductive ethics, and research ethics.

PANELIST: Sydney N. Evans, MSW, C-CHW is a 2021 graduate from Kent State University with a bachelor of science in public health, specializing in community health outreach and development, has emerged as a dedicated professional in her field. Certified as a Community Health Worker (C-CHW) through the Ohio Board of Nursing in 2021, Sydney continued her academic journey and earned a graduate degree in spring 2023 from the CWRU Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, concentrating in community practice for social change.
A lifelong Clevelander, Sydney's profound connection to her community propels her commitment to providing support and encouragement for future generations. She is a full-time community navigator for the Cleveland African American Prostate Cancer Project (CAAPP) at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. The project's objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of three intervention strategies in increasing prostate cancer screening, specifically through prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, among PSA-naïve African American/Black individuals aged 40 and older across Cleveland neighborhoods, employing a community-based approach within barbershops. Sydney's career trajectory reflects her remarkable grit and determination, earning praise from mentors, educators, and colleagues. Presently, she harbors personal and professional goals aligning with her decision to pursue further education in the CWRU Jack Joseph and Morton Mandel social welfare doctoral program.

PANELIST: Erika S. Trapl, PhD is a behavioral epidemiologist whose research focuses on multiple levels of determinants to prevent and reduce chronic disease, and she has led a community-engaged research program for over a decade. Much of her work over the past 15 years has involved informing or evaluating interventions to promote health behavior change and longitudinal data collection in partnership with community organizations, coalitions, residents, and health systems. Through this work, she has established content expertise with substantial contributions to the literature in the areas of tobacco control, community engagement, and evaluation and translation of health behavior interventions.
She has an extensive history in community-based tobacco control research and evaluation, with a specific interest in cigar, cigarillo, and little cigar use among urban adolescents and young adults, where her work has been funded by and informs the US Food & Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products. Her interest in tobacco control also extends to other vulnerable populations, including communities of color, low-income smokers, and sexual and gender minorities. Her research interests have recently extended into cancer prevention and screening in community settings, particularly among marginalized populations.
