Recording of the NHGRI BBAER Pre-Application Webinar Now Available
NHGRI hosted a pre-application webinar for the BBAER Program on August 28, 2024. The webinar provided an overview of the purpose and goals of the program, key application requirements, and eligibility information, as described in RFA-HG-24-026.
The recording, slides, resource list, and frequently asked questions are all now available from the webinar event page.
What is BBAER?
Building Partnerships and Broadening Perspectives to Advance ELSI Research (BBAER) is a new program developed by the ELSI Research Program at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Since 1990, the ELSI Research Program has funded research, research training, resource development, and other activities addressing the ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in genetics and genomics.
The goals of the BBAER Program are to 1) advance ELSI scholarship, 2) enhance ELSI research teams through partnerships with relevant communities, 3) build ELSI research capacity, and 4) expand the ELSI workforce. Collectively, these goals will broaden the types of knowledge, skills, expertise, experience, and perspectives brought to bear in ELSI research.
Who can apply?
The new program is considered a “limited competition” whereby eligible applicants must be domestic organizations located in the United States and its territories that received less than $30 million per year in total NIH funding for the past three fiscal years. These organizations are underrepresented among those funded by NHGRI for ELSI research. Eligible applicants may propose partnerships with other organizations that may receive more than $30 million per year in NIH funding.
I missed the deadline to submit a letter of intent to apply. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can still apply even if you did not submit a letter of intent by the September 16, 2024 deadline. Furthermore, an organization may submit a letter of intent and ultimately decide not to apply. Letters of intent are not required and are not binding, but are very helpful for our internal planning. All applicants are encouraged to email Dr. Rene Sterling at [email protected] at any time to express interest or discuss ideas.
