Pratt developed Sharing Power with Communities in Priority-Setting for Health Research Projects (a set of four worksheets and a companion document available in this database), following consultation with researchers, ethicists, community-based organisation staff, and community engagement practitioners. It can be used to support the sharing of power in health research priority-setting. The toolkit should be used to develop a plan for priority-setting in a global health research project. Academic researchers and their community partners should complete Worksheets 1 to 4 as a team.

The volume of international research in sub Saharan Africa is increasing largely because of the continents unique high burden of diseases such as malaria, HIV and more recently non-communicable diseases. The continent also faces emerging global health challenges such as Ebola and Zika virus all of which will require testing of new medicines, medical devices or understanding the pathophysiology. Many studies now include complex research such as genetic testing.
