Addressing Racism in Research and Clinical Practice

Health scientists, genome researchers, and scholars who study the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetics and genomics (ELSI) are increasingly becoming aware of the effects of structural racism on research and medicine that have long been overlooked by many except those who have studied and experienced them. How can our communities counteract these systemic forces in everyday practices?  In our second monthly ELSI Friday Forum, Dr. Mildred Cho, of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, will moderate a discussion with Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH, pediatrician and public health advocate who serves as the chief medical officer of San Diego 211, and as the director of equity and justice for The California Children’s Trust; Daphne Martschenko, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics; and Robert D. Steiner, MD, Editor-in-Chief of Genetics in Medicine, to discuss specific proposals for action in the conduct, peer review, and publishing of genetic research and clinical practice. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.
