“Genome editing” describes a set of techniques in molecular biology that allow scientists to modify DNA to add, remove or change sequences of genetic material. Genome editing can be understood as a platform or ‘gateway’ technology.
PROJECT NARRATIVE Human genome editing technologies are evolving rapidly and with this evolution brings questions regarding governance and the ethical implications involved in applying these technologies. The He Jiankui controversy is the primary example of the potential exploitation of HGE and the importance of self-governance. This project will be the first case-study to evaluate self-governance in the realm of human genome editing technologies, the findings of which will be validated through a survey of HGE scientists.
PROJECT NARRATIVE Research in reproductive genomics is shifting, from diagnostics to interventions in the human genome, epigenome, and microbiome. But we lack ethical guidance about how to conduct these human trials without causing undue harm, especially in regard to the women participants who are a necessary part of such trials. By building an ethical framework and a toolkit to guide researchers and institutional review boards, this project will create robust guidance for research in reprogenomics and a broadened consensus on these technologies among key professional bodies.
