Reed Pyeritz was Principal Investigator of the University of Pennsylvania Center for the Integration of Genetic Healthcare Technology (Penn CIGHT). This center was focused on the implications of the communication and use of potentially uncertain genetic information and developed tools to help consumers, professionals, policy makers and insurers understand and cope with the certainty or uncertainty of results from genetic technologies. The center operated from 2007 - 2014.
This course covers legal issues related to genetics and genomics research, practice, and policy. The course objectives include addressing the response of the law and the legal system to advances in genomic and genetic information and technologies and anticipating and positing legal responses for the future.
The completion of the Human Genome Project opened new doors for business enterprise. One such activity is direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing, or genetic testing offered on a service-driven basis, without the need for a clinician or other intermediary. DTC genetic testing has been, and continues to be, a burgeoning market and source of genetic data for original research that has produced new insights and discoveries in human ancestry and health.

Prohibits life insurers, long-term care insurers, and disability income insurers from certain actions relating to genetic information or genetic testing of applicants. Prohibits these insurers from taking certain actions relating to coverage or rates unless certain conditions are met.
