Project Narrative This study would be the first to develop an initial bioethics framework to meet a critical gap in biomedical data modeling activities, where the downstream consequences of developing data models without careful and comprehensive review of ethical issues can be severe?not least because poorly developed data models have the potential to impact adversely the health of individuals, groups, and communities.

Dr. Korngiebel's long-term goal is to become an independent researcher at the intersection of bioethics, informatics, and genetic testing. To work toward this goal, she will receive rigorous training that includes 11 courses supplemented by directed tutorials in order to complement her qualitative research skills with proficiency in genetics-related bioethics, informatics pertaining to Electronic Medical Record Health Information Technology, and quantitative data analysis. The research project will allow her to apply the knowledge gained through formal instruction.

Project Summary The breakneck pace of development towards potential uses of germline gene editing (GGE) in medicine raises some very crucial ethical questions. Though much research still needs to be done before GGE will be safe for use on humans, the technology has progressed very rapidly over the past few years. Among the most pressing of the ethical issues raised by GGE are those concerning human subjects research. Future clinical trials will confront novel ethical conundrums that are difficult to resolve given current guidelines.
