Research is currently underway that seeks to deepen our understanding of the role of genetic factors in substance dependence and response to treatment. In order for the potential benefits of emerging research to be realized, it is crucial to begin understanding how members of different racial/ethnic groups comprehend, interpret and respond to information about the role of genetics in addiction and treatment response, and in particular to reported racial differences in the frequency of alleles hypothesized to increase susceptibility to addiction or affect response to treatment.
Autism is a complex lifelong neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorder that manifests in infancy or early childhood. Although the causes are still unknown, the data suggest that autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are likely due to genetic and environmental effects. Differences in culture, socioeconomic status, environmental exposures, access to health care and other factors may influence the expression of the underlying genetic architecture and lead to alterations in prevalence and clinical severity.
Biomedical research involving humans generates results that fall on a continuum of potential interest to participants. Some results, such as blood pressure, have obvious clinical utility, and elevated blood pressure is actionable by taking blood pressure medication. At the other end of the continuum, results from research on the genetics of complex diseases holds great promise for future clinical management; however the results are not immediately actionable and may only be of scientific interest.
Exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing (ES/WGS) are rapidly emerging as important tools in human genetics research. Unlike conventional approaches, ES/WGS can putatively identify all functional variation in the entire coding sequence of a research participant. As a result, both the number and scope of findings with clinical utility are substantially greater than anticipated by existing guidelines and traditional approaches to return of results.
