The Penn Postdoctoral Training Program in the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) of Genetics and Genomics is supported by a training grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute. Under the direction of Steven Joffe, M.D., M.P.H., the program prepares young scholars for success as creative, independent investigators in the field of ELSI research.
Modern genetic research gives us unprecedented ability to understand and manipulate fundamental biological processes. Our growing potential to understand and shape the world in genetic terms also seriously challenges basic beliefs and ethical norms. At the same time, values and norms affect the way genetic research is designed and conducted. Despite the significant ethical and societal implications of emerging genetic research, there are few venues for geneticists to participate in interdisciplinary research and to discuss these issues.
The overall aim of the Center for Genomics and Society (CGS) renewal plan is to carry out an integrated set of transdisciplinary research, training, and policy activities addressing ethical, legal and social Issues involved in the application of genomics to the general public. Genomic testing is already being offered to the general public in an unstudied way by direct-to-consumer companies and through other venues and the use of DNA sequencing to screen populations for preventable health risks is being discussed.
The launch of the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), and the corresponding interest in bioengineered probiotic therapies that this new NIH initiative is likely to generate, provide a unique opportunity for research examining ethical and social considerations in the introduction of new therapeutic modalities. To date, analysis of ethical and social considerations in the use of probiotics have focused on "over the counter" applications where physician involvement in the selection and administration of the probiotic is limited.
The proposed project explores how researchers in the new and growing arena of gene- environment interaction (GxE) research operationalize the concept of "a human population." The proposed project will add critical information about how traditional epidemiologists and genetic epidemiologists, using different kinds of data, work together to operationalize groups in their biomedical studies of disease.
The proposed project explores a new direction in our larger research on the use of human genetic variation studies in the search for biomedically related genetic markers. Broadly, the aim of the new add-on project and the original project is to understand how human genetic variation researchers operationalize the concept of "a human population." Together, these studies will provide empirical information that will help geneticists and bioethicists to understand whether there may be potential downstream social and biomedical consequences of different conceptualizations.
This proposal requests funding to support an evaluation of existing regulatory frameworks and their appropriateness for the regulation of new probiotic products that are available in the market or will be available in the near future.
This research project will collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data about US biobanks, exploring how organizational strategies, features, and attributes affect both framing and response to ELSI and policy choices. We argue that a biobank's organizational features impact 1) policy choices directly, and 2) members' framing and response to ELSI which in turn impact policy choices.
