September 2024 ELSI Friday Forum: Enhancing Access for Historically Marginalized Populations using the Translational Genomics Pipeline
In an era where genomic medicine promises to transform healthcare with cutting-edge treatments and personalized care, it is crucial to ensure these advancements are accessible to all, particularly historically marginalized populations. In collaboration with Black in Genetics (BiG), this forum discussed the challenges hindering access to genomic medicine for marginalized groups, with a special focus on Black populations. The talks discussed how to include diverse ethnic groups to enhance research designed to identify novel genetic risks and gene network modifications. Watch our discussion with Melissa Davis, PhD, Director of the Institute of Translational Genomic Medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine and Shawneequa Callier, JD, MA, Associate Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership at the George Washington University, moderated by Markia Smith PhD, founding BiG President. This forum focused on how to address systemic bias in the analysis and application of genomic data to improve access and inclusion for Black communities and other historically marginalized groups. Key questions included: How do researchers design genomic studies that enhance access to interventions? How does capacity building relate to equity and transformative genomic medicine? What are the barriers in translational research and technology development to delivering precision medicine to underserved populations? How are research questions prioritized in the course of research that address the needs of communities? How can interdisciplinary collaboration address health inequity? We invite you to watch this forum on overcoming the barriers to equitable access in genomic medicine.
