A Multi-stakeholder Approach to the ELSI of Social and Behavioral Genomics: Investigating the Field's Downstream Implications to Mitigate Harms, Promote Benefits, and Locate Social Responsibility
Institution: STANFORD UNIVERSITY
FOA Number: PA-20-190
Abstract
PROJECT NARRATIVE Using an innovative multi-stakeholder approach, this study will contribute essential and timely data, new methods, and ethical analyses to first investigate stakeholders’ (i.e., social and behavioral genomics (SBG) researchers, journal editors, journalists, members of industry, parents, and K-12 educators) roles in the conduct and translation of SBG and their perspectives on SBG’s downstream harms/benefits. It will then determine stakeholders’ roles in producing, mitigating, and/or promoting the downstream harms benefits of SBG for the purpose of locating social responsibility. Finally, the proposed research will identify – through multistakeholder engagement – strategies for mitigating the harms and promoting the benefits of SBG.
