Project Narrative We will continue the effort to promote the development of novel yet practical solutions for important privacy and security challenges in human genomic research, via organizing genomic privacy/security competitions and workshops, with emphasis on engaging/supporting researchers from nationally underrepresented groups to participate in our competitions and attend the workshops.

Project Narrative. This K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award will prepare the candidate to become an independent, mixed-methods ELSI researcher pursing a research program on ethical issues related to the actionability of genomic information. The study examines the values and assumptions underlying conceptualizations of the actionability of genomic information for healthy populations. Results of the study will contribute to the ethical and effective implementation of genomic sequencing into care for healthy populations.

Exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing (ES/WGS) are rapidly emerging as important tools in human genetics research. Unlike conventional approaches, ES/WGS can putatively identify all functional variation in the entire coding sequence of a research participant. As a result, both the number and scope of findings with clinical utility are substantially greater than anticipated by existing guidelines and traditional approaches to return of results.

Dr. Korngiebel's long-term goal is to become an independent researcher at the intersection of bioethics, informatics, and genetic testing. To work toward this goal, she will receive rigorous training that includes 11 courses supplemented by directed tutorials in order to complement her qualitative research skills with proficiency in genetics-related bioethics, informatics pertaining to Electronic Medical Record Health Information Technology, and quantitative data analysis. The research project will allow her to apply the knowledge gained through formal instruction.

With the dramatic reduction in the cost of whole genome sequencing (WGS), genomic data are becoming increasingly available and have the potential to advance public health and promote personalized medicine. However, human genomic data usually carry sensitive personal information making data owners cautious about sharing it and genomic privacy is emerging as a big challenge for the entire biomedical community. In this proposal, we will develop novel methods for genomic privacy protection, which will facilitate genomic research.

The North Coast Conference on Precision Medicine is a national annual mid-sized conference series held in Cleveland, Ohio. The conference series aims to serve as a venue for the continuing education and exchange of scientific ideas related to the rapidly evolving and highly interdisciplinary landscape that is precision medicine research. The topics for each conference coincide with the national conversation and research agenda set by national research programs focused on precision medicine.
